Strangers Revisiting from 1984 at North Lake College

Familiar strangers result from artworks displayed again at North Lake College after 30 years. Dallas Artist Maryanne Meltzer explored the topic of strangers and alienation in a 1984 exhibit. This month the works return, this time alongside those of artist Allison Proulx.

Formerly a movie set designer in Los Angeles, Proulx seems to work in a parallel universe with Meltzer. She depicts flourishing city centers layered over elements of frequently catastrophic current events. While Meltzer explored the idea of strangers, Proulx deals with wanting, consumerism, and a lack of awareness of human suffering.

“When I saw Maryanne’s work, I immediately felt a connection with her, a kindred spirit of sorts,” Proulx says. “Her theme of alienation resonated with my urban landscapes reflecting one’s solitude amidst the crowd, constantly attempting to process the continuous bombardment of the media while carrying on our daily lives.”

Meltzer, who died in April, did the bulk of her work in the 1980s and 1990s.
